New Wave Blues? |
Dear Borys,
You have captured my sentiments
exactly. I commend you on a well-written, truly accurate
assessment of this "new wave". My experiences
with a majority of this group have been exactly what you have
put forth in your article. My parents and grandparents
came to this country in the early 1950's with a trunk, a
Hershey chocolate bar and $5 per family member; WELCOME TO
AMERICA! I only hope it's not too late for the Diaspora!

Dear
Borys,
You are right again! The New
Wave is under the impression that we owe them. It has been
pointed out to me that I should be ashamed not to have more than
I do and my reply is that we worked for what we have and did not
get anything handed to us, so therefore, I couldn't possibly
have as much as they do because we were too busy paying for our
way...Marika |
Greetings
from Canada.
Unfortunately, I have seen this same attitude among new Ukrainian
emigres in Vancouver and Calgary as well. In some cases, one
would nearly be convinced that some of these people are
fifth-columnists. The attititude is often one of
condescension. Ukrainian Canadians are treated as a
"country-bumpkins", and worse, stupid. In fact
many of these so-called Ukrainians are very proud of their
"Russian" past and connection.
Having said that, I have personally made contact with several real
Ukrainians in Ukraine. These people are still the same as we
remember our forbearers So, I think there is hope for a
Ukrainian nation. And, we
must continue to "soldier on" as we have done in the
past---irrespective
of the ignorance around us. There are real and serious
people in that
part of the world who need our help.

I read your article on the
new wave about how the opportunists are taking advantage.
Opportunists will always be here.... in every culture......those
who are in charge of the different organizations who are fed up
with this....should cumulatively take a stand and do something
about it... we have become used to expressing our view points
without hesitation but are not as willing to follow up with
action...things will never change if change is not made....our
parents, grandparents and great grandparents got things done by
actually doing something about what they wanted..... what happened
to us?....It's always easy to wait and see what the next fellow
will do about something....well...it's time to be that next
fellow....
