CHEREMOSH    Under the auspices of the Cheremosh Ukrainian Hutsul Society, this popular dance ensemble and school was formed in 1960 to maintain and perpetuate the cultural heritage and folklore of the Hutsuls.

The costumes worn by the Cheremosh dancers and musicians are exact replicas of Hutsul daily attire based on pre -World War II dress and are provided free of charge to dance group members. The dance ensemble is composed of children in ages 12 to 20; the school accepts members from 7 to 12.

Until Ukraine became independent in August, 1991, Hutsul organizations such as Cheremosh preserved the history and traditions of the Hutsuls which, under fifty years of communist rule, were all but eliminated in their native land.

The Hutsul region in the Carpathian Mountains and the life, customs, traditions, and art of the Hutsuls has always attracted scholars and inspired poets, writers, and dramatists. The natural beauty of the Hutsul region has been captured in the works of painters, sculptors, and photographers.

Land of the Hutsuls, published by "Cheremosh" Ukrainian-Hutsul Society of Philadelphia, 1998, is a bilingual photo album of the Hutsul region of Ukraine. It brings together photographs gathered from around the world donated from the personal albums of Hutsuls who were forced to leave their native land. It also portrays Cheremosh society activities in the United States since 1964.

The album is available from:
